Severn Suzuki

Severn Suzuki

The girl who silenced the world.

This is how it is known Severn Suzuki, a Canadian with only nine years of age, she founded the Children's Environment Organization (Environmental Children's Organization - ECO), formed by a group of children who taught other young people the importance of protecting the environment.

"Hi, I'm Severn Suzuki and represent ECO. We are a group of children 12 and 13 years of age of Canada, trying to bring change: Vanessa Suttie, Morgan Geisler, Michelle Quigg and me. We raised the money ourselves to come here, 5,000 miles to tell you adults you must change your ways. Coming here today, I have a secret agenda. I fight for my future". This is the beginning of the speech left open-mouthed to representatives of the UN Summit on Environment and Development in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Suzuki spoke of the most important environmental issues and made clear that she and her companions were those future generations for sustainable development which needed to be realized.

Today she is 28, has a degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Yale University (USA), it has helped create the Skyfish Project and has begun to participate in the special advisory committee of Kofi Annan for environment issues.
